Man charged over intercepted bomb in car

Garda officers and garda cars surround a small car on the roadside of the N2  near Carrickmacross. The officers are all wearing blue uniforms, but two are wearing yellow high-viz vests over their shirts.  The boot of a hatchback vehicle behind them is open.

A man has been charged in relation to a bomb which was discovered in a car in the Republic of Ireland.

The vehicle was stopped on the N2 near Carrickmacross on Wednesday as part of an operation targeting alleged dissident republican activity.

The man in his 40s is due to appear before a special sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice on Saturday evening.

On Friday, a 25-year-old woman was charged in relation to the same incident.
