BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 27. The European Bank
for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a loan of up
to 35 million euros to Montenegro’s Crnogorski Elektrodistributivni
Sistem (CEDIS) to modernize the country’s energy sector, Trend reports.
This financing will help implement a new SCADA system, an
advanced distribution management system (ADMS), and install smart
meters. The project is also set to receive funding under the
European Union’s Western Balkans Investment Framework.
CEDIS, which operates Montenegro’s power distribution networks,
will use the SCADA system to monitor the grid in real-time, while
the ADMS will optimize electricity distribution operations. The
introduction of smart meters will improve electricity usage
monitoring, helping reduce losses and enhance service
reliability.
The project is expected to reduce technical losses by 10%, cut
grid outages significantly, and enable the integration of renewable
energy sources. It will also improve cyber security and contribute
to better energy efficiency in line with EU standards.
EBRD’s Head of Montenegro, Remon Zakaria, highlighted the
project’s role in transforming Montenegro’s electricity grid,
improving its reliability, and preparing it for renewable energy
integration. CEDIS CEO, Vladimir Ivanović, emphasized the project’s
importance in modernizing Montenegro’s energy infrastructure and
aligning it with green energy goals.
Since joining the EBRD in 2006, Montenegro has received 908
million euros in investments across 95 projects, with a focus on
competitiveness, the green transition, and regional
integration.
