Ursula von der Leyen appears before the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday ahead of the first vote of confidence in a European Commission president since 2014.
The vote itself is scheduled to take place on Thursday. Given the EU’s mainstream parties say they will back her, she will certainly win it. But the debate will give an insight into what opposition is building against von der Leyen and her team of commissioners ― all of whom are expected to be in attendance ― and her strategy of facing down criticism.
The no-confidence debate was triggered after a right-wing Romanian MEP got the necessary number of signatures.
The debate is expected to start shortly after 5 p.m., and we’ll have the best of the action and analysis here.
