The new Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has brought in an astonishing $927 million in global ticket sales, making it the second-biggest opening weekend ever.
Tom Holland’s fourth outing as Marvel favourite Peter Parker / Spider-Man came out last week and has also set a second-best US record, with box office takings of $335m. The film, now Sony’s highest-grossing debut in the studio’s history, made $572 million from over 73,500 screens internationally, with China contributing $121 million alone, according to distributor Sony Pictures.
The superhero movie is only behind Avengers: Endgame, which debuted to $357m in the US and took in more than $1.2bn globally in its opening weekend in 2019.
To put Spidey’s $927m figure into further context, the wall-crawler has surpassed the box office total of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (also starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal) after just four days. The Odyssey hit $911m worldwide three weekends in, and is also fast approaching the $1bn mark – something which should come quickly as the film will soon open in South Korea (5 August), China (14 August) and Japan (11 September).
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is hardly surprising considering that Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s most lucrative franchises and Holland’s third film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, ended up making more than $1.9 billion worldwide to become the eighth-highest earning movie of all time. It was also the first movie since the beginning of the pandemic to cross the $1 billion mark.
However, Brand New Day ‘s strong performance gives Marvel a much-needed boost ahead of the highly anticipated December release of Avengers: Doomsday, a culmination of multiple superhero story arcs which is seen as a make-or-break moment for the studio and its MCU. Marvel has had a long line of under-performing and critically shrugged movies in the last five years, and has failed to attract the same audiences as they did in their peak with Endgame.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the opening of Brand New Day was “truly phenomenal”, adding that he was grateful to audiences for “coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen.”
“This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world – and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come,” added Feige.
Producer Amy Pascal added that it “reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human.”
In Euronews Culture’s review for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we wrote: ” Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who has taken the reins from regular director Jon Watts, does a great job in committing to the character’s comic roots reset, making the stakes believable, and ensuring the emotion matches the spectacle.”
We added: “Despite its shortcomings and not being the slam-dunk the MCU so badly needs, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is bolstered by consistently strong action sequences and a terrific performance from Holland, who can now safely be crowned the greatest on-screen Spider-Man. All four of his solo outings prove how badly Marvel needs him on its roster of heroes.”
